Blepharospasm is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary and repetitive contractions of the muscles around the eyes, leading to frequent blinking or eye twitching. Medications such as anticholinergics, benzodiazepines, or muscle relaxants can also be used to manage symptoms. Physical therapy and behavioral techniques may help by teaching relaxation strategies and reducing stress, which can alleviate symptoms. In severe cases where medication and botulinum toxin injections are not sufficient, surgical interventions such as myectomy (removal of some of the eyelid muscles) may be considered. A multidisciplinary approach that combines medical treatments with supportive therapies is often most effective in managing blepharospasm and improving overall functioning.
